UPDATE 4/30: The upcoming Zelda game's release date changed from March 2017 to simply 2017:

Today, Nintendo has announced that the NX console will not be revealed until March 2017. Not only that, the latest Zelda game is said to be the only game playable at E3, and that it won't be released this year, either.

When we think about it, 2016 will be a pretty quiet year overall, aside from released games that received lukewarm reviews, like Twilight Princess HD, Pokken, especially Star Fox Zero (with a 70 on Metacritic). Later, though, there will be Federation Force, Color Splash, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, each receiving less-than-favorable reactions. Of course, for E3, there will be games that haven't been announced now, but they're still mysteries.

As for the Wii U, despite hits like SSB4, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, etc,. it currently remains the least-selling Nintendo console of all time, contrasting the Wii, which was the best-selling in history.

While I wish we could have more from Nintendo now, they're not in such bad shape that they have to have something out now. Besides, the Gamecube sold pretty poorly, and we all thought that would be the end for Nintendo back then until the Wii hit shelves. And before that, the N64 was a little, well it was a decent console, but not like the SNES was, and that was where Nintendo started loosing ground, all because they kept using cartridges that where more expensive and had less maximum storage than a CD-ROM. I'd go into more detail about that story, but it'd be a little off topic. My point is, Nintendo started to slip with the N64, tripped up with the Gamecube, got back in the race with the Wii, only to fall flat with the Wii U.

Nintendo's had their share of ups and downs just like their biggest rivals, Sony and Microsoft. But they take their time with their products instead of trying to meet a deadline, and that's one thing that separates them. As Shigero Miyamoto once said: "A delayed game is eventually good, a rushed game is forever bad." This can apply consoles too, so whatever the NX is, hopefully it's something we'll all want and not end up collecting dust.

And to speak of Nintendo's former rival, Sega, they had problems that eventually forced them out of consoles. If this becomes Nintendo's fate, it won't be the end of the world for them since they could transition to third-party development should that ever happen. They already have apps on non-Nintendo platforms, namely Miimoto on Android and iOS.

Of course, time will tell if the NX proves Nintendo can still make consoles we all want to buy or not. And if not, well, they still dominate the handheld market at least!
